Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra Presents “The Wayfarer’s Hope: A Nation’s Journey”

A Wayfarer's Hope: A Nation's Journey

The Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra continues its six-part America250 season—The American Journey: Struggle, Spirit, and Triumph—with its fifth installment, The Wayfarer’s Hope: A Nation’s Journey on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

This poignant orchestral program traces the emotional and physical journeys that shape both a nation and its people. Through music of reflection, longing, and ultimate triumph, the concert explores what it means to move forward—together.

The program opens with the world premiere of a newly commissioned overture by American composer William C. White. Written specifically for this occasion, the work introduces a fresh contemporary voice and reflects on where the United States stands today—and where it might go next. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the premiere underscores the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra’s commitment not only to honoring history, but also to shaping the future of American music.

Next, mezzo-soprano Sedona Libero joins the orchestra for Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). This deeply personal song cycle portrays a traveler navigating heartbreak, hope, and the search for meaning. Intimate and emotionally charged, Mahler’s work mirrors the individual struggles and aspirations that collectively define the American story.

Following intermission, the orchestra performs Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, a sweeping and powerful work long associated with national identity and perseverance. Its soaring final movement, filled with momentum and light, offers a triumphant conclusion—an anthem of resilience, renewal, and optimism.

“The Wayfarer’s Hope is about movement—forward motion through uncertainty,” says Denise Wilson, Executive Director of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra. “Each of these works speaks to transformation. From a new American overture being born on our stage, to Mahler’s personal journey, to Sibelius’s expansive symphonic triumph, this program reminds us that hope is not passive. It’s something we choose.”

Audience members are invited to attend Behind the Baton at 3:15 PM, a free pre-concert conversation featuring Artistic Director Desmond Siu and guest artist Sedona Libero. This engaging discussion provides insight into the music, the composers, and the emotional landscape of the program.

Part of the orchestra’s America250 initiative, The Wayfarer’s Hope: A Nation’s Journey continues SSO’s exploration of the shared heritage, diversity, and perseverance that define the United States as it approaches its 250th anniversary.

Tickets range from $10 to $35 and are available at ScottsdaleSymphonicOrchestra.org or through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts box office.
