Through music of reflection, longing, and ultimate triumph, the concert explores what it means to move forward—together.  The program opens with the world premiere of a newly commissioned overture by American composer William C. White. Written specifically for this occasion, the work introduces a fresh contemporary voice and reflects on where the United States stands today—and where it might go next. Next, mezzo-soprano Sedona Libero joins the orchestra for Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). This deeply personal song cycle portrays a traveler navigating heartbreak, hope, and the search for meaning. Intimate and emotionally charged, Mahler’s work mirrors the individual struggles and aspirations that collectively define the American story. Following intermission, the orchestra performs Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, a sweeping and powerful work long associated with national identity and perseverance. Its soaring final movement, filled with momentum and light, offers a triumphant conclusion—an anthem of resilience, renewal, and optimism. “The Wayfarer’s Hope is about movement—forward motion through uncertainty,” says Denise Wilson, Executive Director of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra. “Each of these works speaks to transformation. From a new American overture being born on our stage, to Mahler’s personal journey, to Sibelius’s expansive symphonic triumph, this program reminds us that hope is not passive.
