The Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra concludes its 2025–2026 America250 season, The American Journey: Struggle, Spirit, and Triumph, with its final concert, Dreams of Freedom: The American Experience, on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
This season finale brings the orchestra’s yearlong exploration of America’s evolving identity to a powerful and inspiring close. Through music that reflects liberty, diversity, remembrance, and innovation, Dreams of Freedom captures the many dimensions of the American experience.
The program opens with Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, a dramatic and triumphant work that embodies the universal pursuit of freedom. It is followed by George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, performed by guest pianist José Salazar, whose virtuosic artistry brings to life Gershwin’s iconic fusion of classical tradition and jazz-infused American energy.
After intermission, the program turns toward reflection and renewal. Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture evokes the optimism and expansive spirit of the American landscape, while Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings offers a moment of profound remembrance and emotional depth. The concert concludes with Michael Daugherty’s Night Owl, a vibrant and contemporary work that captures the restless creativity and cultural energy of modern America.
Adding to the significance of the performance, Steinway & Sons will provide a Model D concert grand piano, ensuring an exceptional musical experience for Gershwin’s beloved masterpiece.
“This concert brings our season full circle,” says Denise Wilson, Executive Director of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra. “It reflects the ideals, challenges, and creativity that define the American story; from the pursuit of freedom to the vibrant diversity of voices that continue to shape our culture. It’s a celebration of where we’ve been and where we are going.”
Audience members will also be among the first to hear the announcement of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra’s 2026–2027 season, offering an exciting look ahead at the organization’s next chapter.
Prior to the performance, guests are invited to attend Behind the Baton at 3:15 PM, a free pre-concert conversation featuring Artistic Director Desmond Siu, providing insight into the music and its place within the season’s broader narrative.
Part of SSO’s America250 initiative, Dreams of Freedom: The American Experience serves as both a culmination and a celebration—honoring the spirit of a nation 250 years in the making, while looking ahead to its future.
Tickets range from $10 to $35 and are available at ScottsdaleSymphonicOrchestra.org or through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts box office.
