The Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra continues its America250 season—The American Journey: Struggle, Spirit, and Triumph—with an inspiring Valentine’s Day weekend concert titled Voices of Courage: A Triumph of Spirit. The performance takes place on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Virginia G. Piper Theater, located at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
This soul-stirring concert pairs two powerful orchestral works that honor resilience, justice, and the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity:
Margaret Bonds – Montgomery Variations
A rarely performed masterwork inspired by the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the American civil rights movement, this evocative piece blends gospel traditions, orchestral richness, and a deep reverence for hope and equality.Dmitri Shostakovich – Violin Concerto No. 1
Written under oppressive Soviet censorship, this gripping concerto is a defiant expression of individuality and inner strength. Performed by guest violin soloist Joseph Morag, the piece speaks volumes without uttering a word.
Prior to the performance, audience members are invited to attend Behind the Baton, a free pre-concert talk at 3:15 PM featuring Artistic Director Desmond Siu and Joseph Morag, who will share insights into the music, the composers, and the stories behind their works.
“This concert shines a light on what it means to be courageous,” says Denise Wilson, Executive Director. “We chose these two composers because they channeled their convictions into music that is both beautiful and brave. It’s a perfect program for a meaningful date night or anyone who wants to be moved and inspired.”
Part of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra’s Date Night with a Purpose campaign, this Valentine’s weekend performance invites couples, friends, and music lovers of all kinds to trade flowers and prix-fixe menus for something more heartfelt: an unforgettable shared experience through music that matters.
Voices of Courage is the fourth program in the orchestra’s America250 season, a yearlong musical journey leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary. Through concerts that spotlight American ideals, social progress, and the stories that shape us, the SSO continues to use music as a lens for reflection, unity, and celebration.
Tickets range from $10 to $35 and are available at ScottsdaleSymphonicOrchestra.org or through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts box office.
